Decades-old found footage from NASA’s abandoned Apollo 18 mission, where two American astronauts were sent on a secret expedition, reveals the reason the U.S. has never returned to the moon.

Film Review

Technically flashy, but a shitty script: there is hardly a brief statement that better summarizes what's been wrong with American cinema in the past decade or so. One would think, or at least hope, that anno 2011 big-budget movies would have moved from unintentionally comical low-budget 50s fluff such as "The Brain From Planet Arous"; far from it. Little (and large) spidery alien parasites are on yet another filmic tour of the human body. Destination: brain. Misson: kill kill KILL. They might as well have called this silly flick "Spider Aliens from the Moon vs. NASA". At least it would have been honest, instead of feigning seriousness by giving this silly story a documentary feel. As if "realism" can make a bunch of sneaky alien spiders seem any less absurd than they'd been back in the 50s.In fact, A18 would have worked much better had it adopted an honest, goofy, down-to-Earth (n.p.i.) "Mars Attacks" approach. That movie is pretty wea…

The found footage horror genre gets space-bound when the NASA retrieved documentation of a covert moon landing mission is revealed to the public. The Apollo 28 mission was in fact not totally scraped, but went underground as part of the cold war logic. With top secret news of Russians landing on the moon revealed to the government, a three-piece crew of astronauts: Ben Anderson (Warren Christie), Nate Walker (Lloyd Owen) and pilot John Grey (Ryan Robbins) are sent to hook up some cameras and sensors, supposedly for intelligence purposes. However upon landing, Ben and Nate are soon aware that they are not alone in the silence…Even foregoing the unsolvable puzzle of how footage from a failed moon mission made it back to space, "Apollo 18" does not riddle itself with adherence to logic. The critters themselves are moon spiders parading as ordinary rocks, so one begs to question how they sustain their life on a diet of sparsely visiting astronauts (unless they also devour thei…

I'd really give this a 7.5. Despite the poor reviews, I really liked this film. The found footage/cinéma vérité style works for me and I am a fan of the slow creepy build in horror films. Think, the original Alien, where nothing happens until you think you can't stand it and then oh my God! So I definitely recommend this. Ideally this could have used a little more editing and been tightened up. It would have been very effective as a fake documentary on the ScyFy channel or Discovery. Or perhaps as part of a horror anthology television series and shortened to about and hour. Similar films might be Alien, the Ring, Blair Witch Project. Just remember, be patient and you will be rewarded.
