When the patriarch of the family passes away, the teenage children must take responsibility for the family chores: the preparation of the rituals, the hunting and putting the all-important meat on the table. Film Review

I can't say whether i liked or disliked "We are what we are". It certainly is interesting , without being spectacular and the acting was pretty good but i could not help feeling that we needed to know the background of this very odd family. Why did they eat people? Why did they have to do the ritual? Why was the father poisoned? To many question and not enough answers for my liking yet it wasn't half as bad as some reviews say it is. It is a grim film. You could even say depressing but that is not criticism because that is the type of film it is.One other thing ,If you go into this film thinking it is a horror you might be a little disappointed.

Seems like a student short film with the length of a feature film but nothing else. The same clichés that have buried Mexican cinema: always the ugly Mexico City, always the same depressed and depressing characters without any real life, hope or anything, always cursing and with gratuitous violence that does not have any real impact in the viewer. The real cannibalism in this film is the one the filmmakers had with their story and their characters: what is left on the screen are only the bones of something that vaguely reminds of a movie, and a bad one. There is no real horror, no real people, no real suspense, no real gore, no real nothing in this well intentioned but failed movie. By the way, SPOILER ALERT, there's a scene where Daniel Gimenez Cacho and Juan Carlos Colombo recreates their scene and characters in Guillermo del Toro's classic CRONOS. How did this happen? I guess Del Toro never read the scrip and so the actors. And the worst thing is that the scene does …

We Are What We Are begins with a desperate, bedraggled tramp of a man, the very picture of Poverty, lurching through a Mexican outdoor mall, leering at lingerie-clad mannequins through a store's plate-glass window. The store's manager (owner?) chases Poverty away and polishes his window back to a shine, wiping away the drool. Poverty sees his reflection in the window as if for the first time, or the first time in years and the sight stuns him like an electric shock. Stumbling to the ground, spitting out black bile on the polished mall floor, Poverty falls and dies. The film pauses for a second, as if to ask if there is room in this Mexico for sympathy, rescue or hope. Then two mall security guards arrive and efficiently carry the body away. Behind them a mall maintenance man arrives with a mop to wash away Poverty's bile. In this Mexico, the poor are so wretched that they can not even leave behind their stains. We come to know this man through the family that he leaves be…
